Play the southwest and you’ll encounter spectacular lake, mountain and ocean views, tricky gorse, genuine sand fairways and a big dose of history. This package includes the classic Killeen Course at Killarney in County Kerry, home to the Irish Open in 2010 and 2011 and one of the oldest and most internationally recognized clubs in the world. The par three 10th hole here virtually plays into a lake. The hidden gem of your tour is Dooks Golf Club on the Ring of Kerry, an old-fashioned 16-hole course set on sand dunes at the head of the Dingle Bay, with views of water and mountains, rolling green hills and the whitewashed buildings of a nearby fishing village. Golf play has taken place in the breathtaking landscape since 1889.

You’re your way out to sea in County Kerry as you play at the iconic Ballybunion Old Course above the Atlantic. One writer described the course as “menacing but spectacular. Tom Watson, who oversaw a 1998 renovation, says the course is a must-do for links enthusiasts. Head to County Clare for more golf with history at Lahinch Golf Club, just a few minutes from the dramatic Cliffs of Mohr. Alister MacKenzie of Augusta National Fame and Tom Morris from St. Andrews had a hand in the original 1800s design.

Nestled amidst the splendor of the Lakes of Killarney in the shadow of the majestic Macgillycuddy’s Reeks mountain range, the Killeen Course is consistently rated amongst the world’s top courses and has hosted many major championships including the 1991 & 1992 Irish Open Golf Championship, won on both occasions by Nick Faldo; and also the 1996 Curtis Cup. Return to your Killarney hotel. (B)

Day 3 | PLAY DOOKS. Dooks Golf Club Golf has been played in Dooks since 1889, when it was introduced to local aristocracy. It is one of the oldest Links course in Ireland. The course is set on a stretch of sand dune at the head of Dingle Bay. For the golfer seeking a beautiful and tranquil environment to enjoy good golf, Dooks presents a convincing case. Hole 13 best illustrates the charm and magic of Dooks. It is a throw back hole to the time when golf began. Greens lay where they fell and were better for it. Return to Killarney. (B)

Day 4 | PLAY BALLYBUNION OLD COURSE. The mention of the old course at Ballybunion Golf Club, strikes a chord with golfing enthusiasts around the globe. Rated one of the ten best golf courses in the world, standing on the first tee at Ballybunion is every bit as awe inspiring as one could imagine in many respects, it’s like standing on the first at the Old Course in St. Andrews. Afterwards, return to Killarney for overnight. (B)

Day 5 | PLAY BALLYBUNION CASHEN COURSE. Many consider that Ballybunion Golf Club is all about the Old Course. However nothing could be further from the truth. Designed by legendary course architect, Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1980, the Cashen Course at Ballybunion is more than entitled to share the same hallowed turf as the Old Course and is a superb test of links golf in every respect. That some consider that the Cashen Course presents a stiffer challenge than the Old Course. Onwards to Ennis for overnight. (B)

Day 6 | PLAY LAHINCH OLD COURSE. Golf has been played at Lahinch since 1892 when officers of a Scottish Army Regiment based at nearby Limerick, happened upon the vast expanse of sand dunes that is Lahinch Golf Club. Lahinch Golf Club is famed also for some of its idiosyncrasies including the weather forecasting goats who will graze out on the dunes in fine weather but will seek the shade of the clubhouse when they sense rain approaching. Afterwards, return to your hotel in Ennis. (B)
